Meet the CAS Board, March Profile

26 March 2026      Fiona Wilson, National Code Advisor

Compliance, Assurance & Scrutiny Board Member Profile for March

Meet Tracy Altham, University of Manchester

I’ve worked at The University of Manchester since 2008, joining at a time when the UUK Accommodation Code of Practice was still in its early days. My role has focused on overseeing and ensuring compliance with the Code which meant quickly getting to grips with some unfamiliar areas, including legionella requirements (I now always run taps, showers, and flush toilets when I get home after a week away… and I suspect I’m not the only one!)

Over time, I’ve worked closely with colleagues to build awareness and embed the Code into everyday practice here at The University of Manchester. This has helped ensure we’re prepared for Triennial Audits and that the Code remains front of mind.

Alongside my role at Manchester, I’ve been part of the CAS Board since 2023. Through my work on the CAS Board and Scrutiny Panel, I’ve gained a governance perspective and seen first-hand the common themes emerging across the sector which reinforces the value of sharing good practice across the sector.

In October 2025, I took on the role of Interim National Code Manager, supporting The Code’s transition to a standalone Special Interest Organisation under Professional HE Services. My focus is on the practical operation of The Code, including implementing the new Code Management System and supporting members with their submissions.

Some people have said I must be a little “mad” to take this on alongside my other role. Five months in, they might be right! But I’ve really enjoyed the variety, and I feel very fortunate to work with supportive colleagues at the University of Manchester, across CAS, and with ACoP colleagues in delivering The Code.

I’ll also be attending the ASRA Conference so if you’re there, please do come and say hello, I’d be very happy to chat about The Code or queries around the upcoming submission requirements.
