Are you considering changing your accommodation operating model?

13 August 2026      Fiona Wilson, National Code Advisor

ACoP has responded proactively to the changing landscape of student accommodation by partnering with our legal adviser to deliver the recent roundtable, From Voids to Value: Strategic Use of Student Accommodation Without Losing Control.

This insightful session explored the key considerations for institutions looking to generate income from surplus student accommodation while maintaining compliance with the Code. Using practical case studies and expert legal guidance, attendees gained valuable insight into the opportunities, risks and governance considerations associated with alternative uses of student accommodation.

The exceptional level of attendance demonstrated the significance of this topic across the sector. If you or your strategic decision-makers were unable to join the session, we encourage you to review the recording, presentation slides and case study materials. One of the attendees shared:

This session was extremely timely and picked up on a number of questions that we are facing. Hilary Crook covered a wide range of issues associated with the use of accommodation in ways that are not traditional student letting and her knowledge and consideration of the implications was clear. However, it was always engaging and understandable. Participants shared their experiences and questions as we went along, which ensured it was always grounded in the realities we face. And there were questions that I hadn’t realised we needed to consider.  In the space of an hour there was so much learning and thought-provoking content – and all for free!

This is particularly important for institutions considering alternative uses of accommodation registered with ACoP, as changes to occupancy or operational arrangements may have implications for ongoing Code compliance. Early consideration of these issues can help ensure opportunities to generate additional income are pursued without inadvertently placing compliance at risk.
